Ari Aster

American · b. 1986

American filmmaker born July 15, 1986 in Princeton, New Jersey. Studied at AFI Conservatory, where his short film The Strange Thing About the Johnsons (2011) built an early reputation for pairing dark comedy with family dysfunction and taboo. His feature debut, Hereditary (2018), was an immediate critical and commercial success in the "elevated horror" wave, grossing over $90 million worldwide, followed by Midsommar (2019). Aster co-founded the production company Square Peg in 2019 with producer Lars Knudsen, then shifted toward surrealist comedy-drama with Beau Is Afraid (2023) and neo-Western satire with Eddington (2025). His films consistently return to unresolved grief, inherited trauma, and the slow reveal that a family's private catastrophe was never as private, or as accidental, as it first appeared.
