Roman Polanski

French-Polish · b. 1933

French-Polish filmmaker born August 18, 1933 in Paris, France, and raised in Krakow, Poland. Chinatown (1974), written by Robert Towne, is the centerpiece of his American period alongside Rosemary's Baby -- a neo-noir built on the genre's private-eye conventions that uses them to land a much darker, more personal reveal than the mystery-of-the-week plot suggests up front.
